GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Squalicum earns win over Neah Bay

Chalae Wolters scored 20 points and hit some key free throws in the fourth quarter to lead the Squalicum girls’ basketball team to a 37-33 over Neah Bay at the Crush in the Slush tournament in Port Townsend.

“(Neah Bay) had three legit scorers,” Squalicum coach Vic Wolffis said in a phone interview. “I thought we did a great job on them defensively. (Wolters) was our steady offensive player.”

Des’ree Henry had five points for the Storm and Josie Andert added four points as Squalicum improved to 3-7 on the season.

Squalicum next hosts Ferndale in Northwest Conference action at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Blaine 49, Cascade Christian 42: The Borderites got a win despite a slow start in the Cloud 9 Christmas Classic. Blaine fell behind early but a strong second half captained by a Josie Deming, who finished with a double-double (points and rebounds).

Lakewood 56, Bellingham 45: Despite forcing Lakewood to 1-for-23 3-point shooting, the Red Raiders’ poor third quarter cost them the Crush in the Slush contest. Marissa Blair led the Cougars with 22 points while the Red Raiders were led by Emily Benson’s 12 points and three assists. Autumn Jacobsen led Bellingham with 11 rebounds.

Snohomish 66, Sehome 32: Sarah Eissess had seven points and five rebounds as Sehome lost to Snohomish in the Cloud 9 Sports Lynden Christmas Classic at Lynden Christian High School. Madison MacPhee and Madison Ulrich had six points each for the Mariners.

Aussie Travelers 78, Nooksack Valley 51: The Pioneers turned the ball over 34 times against a quick Australian traveling team and it was too much to overcome in the Crush in the Slush contest. At the half, the Pioneers trailed 48-22 at the half. Katrina Gimmaka’s 18 points led Nooksack Valley.

Meridian 73, Sultan 36: The Trojans handled Sultan easily, shooting 50 percent from the floor in a Meridian Holiday Tournament win. Ryley Zapien scored 23, Kyrin Baklund scored 17 and Kiana Gray, a Blaine transfer, continued to grow into her new team with a 13-point, 10-rebound effort.

Lynden 64, W.F. West 42: Lynden finally got over the hump of W.F. West that’s plagued the Lions the past several years in the state playoffs with a big win. Mariah Gonzalez and Jasmyne Neria set the tone, combining for 23 points and Elisa Kooiman scored 25 in what coach Rob Adams called the most complete games from start to finish of the year.

We came together in the second half. It was a good win for us.

Up next

The Cloud 9 Sports Christmas Classic comes to conclusion with the Lyncs game against Glacier Peak. The Grizzlies are a top-tier 3A school and will be a mighty test for perennial power LC.
