GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Kooiman gets double-double in win

Elisa Kooiman scored 27 points and snagged 10 rebounds to lead Lynden to a 53-32 win over Friday Harbor in a nonconference game on Tuesday, Dec. 22, on the road.

“When she starts to defend and rebound she has some of her better offensive games,” Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview.

Also leading the charge on the defensive side of things was Jasmyne Neria, who gave “one of her best defensive efforts of the season” in the second half to keep the Wolverines, who boast three 6-footers, from stealing the win.

Sierra Smith had eight points and Olivia Bonsen had four for the Lions.

Lake Washington 51, Ferndale 46: Freshman Morgan Barlean saw extended playing duty and turned in a double-double, but it wasn’t enough, as the Golden Eagles (2-6, 1-1 Northwest Conference) fell during the second day of the Eastside Catholic Christmas Classic. Darrien Camarillo recorded 11 points, nine steals, four rebounds and four assists to go along with the 11 points and 11 rebounds Barlean recorded, but Ferndale struggled to work the ball inside against the Kangaroos, who had two 6-foot posts.

We had a lead at halftime ... but at the end we just ran out of gas. Only having eight girls suit out hurt our depth.

Ferndale coach Mike Ivy

Shorewood 66, Mount Baker 30: The Mountaineers (8-1, 2-0) undefeated season ended against Class 4A Shorewood, as the Thunderbirds’ size was too much for 1A Baker. Still, 5-foot-3 Haylee Malone was able to snag six rebounds. Danielle Tyler led the Mounties in points with nine.

Up next

Ferndale is the only girls’ team in action Wednesday as the Golden Eagles take on Franklin in the Eastside Catholic Christmas Classic.
