GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Edison leads Golden Eagles to overtime win
Gabrielle Edison scored seven of her 18 points in overtime to lead the Ferndale girls’ basketball team to a 48-46 Northwest Conference victory over Anacortes on Thursday, Dec. 17, at Ferndale High School.
“We pretty much rode Edison down the stretch,” Ferndale coach Mike Ivy said in a phone interview. “She scored seven points in overtime and that was huge.”
Edison also had 13 rebounds and Darrien Camarillo added 10 points and four assists.
Ivy said the Golden Eagles were solid against the Seahawks. “We knew we had to play extremely good basketball and we did,” he said.
Clare Martin led Anacortes with 13 points.

Lynden Christian 73, Squalicum 43: Sam Van Loo had 18 points, Isabela Hernandez added 14 points and nine rebounds and Kara Bajema had 12 points to lead the Lyncs to a win over Squalicum at home in Northwest Conference action to improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the NWC. The Storm had 16 points and five rebounds from Chalae Wolters but dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Mount Baker 42, Sedro-Woolley 40: Emily Brandland came up with a “monster” rebound with seconds left to seal a Mountaineers win and keep their undefeated season alive. Kylind Powell led the team with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Brandland finished with 12 and Danielle Tyler scored 11.
Meridian 65, Bellingham 41: Ellesse FitzGerald had 16 points to lead Meridian to a Northwest Conference victory at Bellingham. Kyrin Baklund added 12 points for the Trojans. Autumn Jacobsen led the Red Raiders with 13 points in a game that had a combined 70 turnovers. Bellingham coach Mark Wright said it was a combination of sloppiness and defense. “The ball was kind of everywhere in the gym tonight,” Wright said in a phone interview.
Burlington-Edison 66, Blaine 35: Blaine suffered a Northwest Conference loss at home against Burlington-Edison. Josie Deming led the Borderites with nine points and three assists, and Kjirstin Larson had eight points and four rebounds. Brandy Smith had 14 points to lead Burlington-Edison.
Nooksack Valley 52, Sehome 34: The Pioneers (5-2, 1-1 Northwest Conference) played good second-half defense and pulled away with the win over the Mariners (2-5, 0-2). Brianna Turner scored 14 points and Emilia Gimmaka coming back from injury grabbed 11 rebounds for Nooksack. Madison MacPhee led Sehome with 11 points.
Australian Traveling Team 64, Lummi 12: “A pretty good” traveling team from Australia came in to Lummi and dominated the Blackhawks from the start. Chantel Martin hit two 3s to lead Lummi with six points but Violet Rodriguez also impressed coach Albert Toby.
Our girls played really hard and really well together. ... It was fun watching them play together and sharing the rock.

Lynden's bout last year with Everett was a tight 12-point game and with the Lions looking to build some momentum through the holidays, this game will be an important test.
