BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Beard, Toner help Pioneers hold on to win
Nooksack Valley fended off a late rally from the Ivanhoe Travelers, a touring team from Australia, to pull out a 58-53 nonconference victory on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Nooksack Valley High School.
The Pioneers led 48-38 in the fourth quarter but the Travelers’ extended zone defense posed problems for Nooksack.
“They really slowed the game down for us,” Nooksack Valley (4-3, 0-1 NWC) coach Chris Scrimsher said in a phone interview. “We missed some costly wide-open layups and that made it really interesting in the end.”
Connor Beard led Nooksack with 18 points but it was Jeremy Toner, who came off the bench and scored seven points and tallied eight rebounds, that impressed Scrimsher the most.
We played Lynden last night and that took a lot of energy out of the game.
