BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Sehome edges Mount Baker in NWC opener
The Sehome boys’ basketball team earned a 54-51 victory Tuesday, Dec. 15, at Mount Baker in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams.
Marcus Montag had 20 points to lead the Mariners, Logan Deboo added 15 points and Leighton Kingma had 10 points.
Sehome assistant coach Jordan Chalfant said Mount Baker is a tough place to play.
“It was our work ethic,” Chalfant said in a phone interview of what it took to win. “Kids diving on the floor. We just outworked Baker, which is tough to do.”
TJ Bass had 13 points for the Mountaineers and Grant Balvanz had 12 points and four rebounds.

Lynden 62, Nooksack Valley 47: The Lynden Lions had 22 points, 12 rebounds and six assists from Sterling Somers and Noah King added 11 points in a Northwest Conference road win at Nooksack Valley. The game was tied at 29-29 at halftime but the Lions rolled after that. Connor Beard had 17 points and Aaron Bosscher added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Pioneers.
Anacortes 85, Meridian 53: Marcus McGuinn had 14 points and eight rebounds, Brady Moore added 14 points with two 3-pointers but Meridian lost its Northwest Conference opener at home to Anacortes. The Seahawks hit 14 3-pointers in the game. Trystan Lowry had 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
Ferndale 58, Sedro-Woolley 48: Ferndale outscored Sedro-Woolley 20-6 during the fourth quarter to earn a Northwest Conference win over the Cubs at home. Garett Holmes scored a game-high 17 points with three 3s. Austin Honeycutt added 15 and John Weg and Dane Larsen each scored 10 points.
Lummi 60, Prov. Classical Christian 31: Trazil Lane scored 31 points and hauled in 13 rebounds as Lummi overcame 23 turnovers to beat Providence Classical Christian. Jeff Cultee added 12 points, the Blackhawks outscored Providence 24-3 during the fourth quarter.
We felt pretty good and in the second half we just ran out of gas.
