GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Smith, Zwiers big part of Lynden win
Lynden got big performances from its support players, namely Sierra Smith (10 points) and Lauren Zwiers (12), to pull to a big 56-36 win over Nooksack Valley on Tuesday, Dec. 15, in a Northwest Conference opener at Lynden High School.
“Nooksack coach (Shane) Wichers always has his team well prepared and he put them in spots defensively we struggled with in the first quarter,” Lynden coach Rob Adams said in a phone interview. “But what really sparked us was the play of Sierra Smith and Lauren Zwiers.”
The Pioneers (4-2, 0-1) shot 47 percent from 3-point range and were led by Katrina Gimmaka’s 11 points and Nikki VanderHeiden’s 9. Jasmyne Neria led the Lions (4-1, 1-0 NWC) with 16 points.

Kylind Powell chipped in with nine points for Mount Baker. Madison MacPhee and Samantha Hruby had seven points each for Sehome and Taryn Clark had six points and seven rebounds.
Anacortes 47, Meridian 33: The Trojans didn’t play their best ball and the “long and athletic” Seahawks took advantage for the Northwest Conference win. Kyrin Baklund led Meridian with 10 points and two 3-pointers but a 36-18 Anacortes’ advantage on the glass was too much for Meridian.
Sedro-Woolley 53, Ferndale 44: Ferndale was outscored 25-9 during the fourth quarter and took a Northwest Conference home loss to Sedro-Woolley. The Golden Eagles committed 36 fouls and yielded a game-high 32 points to Sedro-Woolley’s Samantha Cox. Gabrielle Edison led Ferndale with 18 points, and Darrien Camarillo had 11.
Highland Christian 35, Lummi 17: The Blackhawks vastly improved over their opening four-point performance with a loss to Highland Christian. Jenyha Ell and Chantel Martin each had six points to lead Lummi.
We did not play well at all but I give them a lot of credit.
