GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Nooksack Valley beats La Conner
Olivia Berkan recorded four 3-pointers and scored 13 points to help Nooksack Valley earn a 47-40 non-league win over La Conner on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Nooksack Valley High School.
Pioneers’ Katrina Gimmaka scored a team-high 14 points, and Brianna Turner had six points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Nooksack Valley led by two entering the fourth quarter but outscored La Conner 12-7 during the final eight minutes.
“Jasmin Zavala came in and played really good defense on (La Conner’s Kame) Pino,” Nooksack Valley coach Shane Wichers said in a phone interview. “Jasmin did a really good job.
Nooksack Valley out rebounded La Conner 30-21 and shot 18 of 48 from the floor.

Meridian 55, Vashon Island 22: Meridian got 16 points from Kyrin Baklund and balanced scored from the rest of the team to grab a lopsided 55-22 win over Vashon Island. The Trojans jumped out to a 31-9 halftime lead, as their press forced 27 Vashon turnovers. Ellesse FitzGerald scored eight points and had a game-hgh five assists, while Kiana Gray had nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
Mount Rainier Christian 56, Lummi 4: The Blackhawks were held scoreless in the second, third and fourth quarters, as they dropped their second game in as many nights. Inexperienced Lummi also fell 63-19 to Lopez Island on Friday, Dec. 12. Ceona Raban and Jayda Phair each logged two points for Lummi Saturday.
We had great energy and team effort. They couldn’t handle the pressure at all, so we had to call off the dogs at halftime.
