GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Trojans hand Pioneers their first defeat of season

Ellesse FitzGerald had 18 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Meridian girls’ basketball team to a 54-45 nonconference victory Friday, Dec. 11, over the previously unbeaten Nooksack Valley Pioneers.

“It was a big win for us, just trying to build and improve,” Meridian coach Mark Gilmore said in a phone interview. “The girls played really hard.”

Ryley Zapien had 12 points and three assists for the Trojans and MacKenzie Cox pulled down six rebounds.

Arlissa Oettel and Brianna Turner had 12 points each for Nooksack Valley and Katrina Gimmaka added 10 points.

Mount Baker 66, Oak Harbor 14: The Mount Baker girls rolled to a nonconference win over Oak Harbor on Friday, Dec. 11, at home. Emily Brandland had 17 points and three assists, Kylind Powell had 15 points, 13 rebounds and three assists, Kylee Engholm had 11 points, including three 3-pointers and Danielle Tyler added 12 points.

Bellingham 74, Marysville-Pilchuck 63: Red Raiders coach Mark Wright got his first win at Bellingham as his squad exploded offensively in a foul-heavy game. Paige Jacobsen led Bellingham with 16 points while Emily Benson scored 14, Suzie Bennett scored 13 and Eliza Rossman scored 12. There were 52 total fouls in the game.

Anacortes 49, Sehome 36: Sehome’s Sam Hruby scored nine points and had 10 boards, but the Mariners struggled during the fourth quarter and took a 49-36 nonleague loss to Anacortes on Friday, Dec. 11, on the road. Sarah Eissess scored a team-high 11 points, and Madison McPhee had four points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Up next

The Pioneers have to turnaround and face La Conner less than 24 hours after Friday night's contest. Nooksack Valley lost to the Braves last year, so this game will show how improved the Pioneers are.
