GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Brandland leads 5-0 Mountaineers over Red Raiders

The Mount Baker girls’ basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season after a 60-37 victory Wednesday, Dec. 10, at home over Bellingham.

Emily Brandland had 26 points, nine rebounds and five 3-pointers to lead the Mountaineers, who used a 29-6 second-quarter advantage to essentially put the game away.

“We put the press on and we got a lot in transition,” Mount Baker coach Kim Preston said in a phone interview.

Haylee Malone added 10 points for the Mountaineers, and McKenzie Yost and Kylee Engholm had three assists each.

Preston said her team is playing well to start the season.

“We’ve got quite a few younger kids and it feels like they are improving and even though we have lapses in games we are learning from them,” Preston said. “(Brandland) played really well. I think her maturity and leadership has been pretty huge for us.”

Kylie Clark had 11 points for Bellingham, Suzie Bennett added six points and seven rebounds and Emily Benson had four assists.

A battle of city schools Thursday will be a good test for both Squalicum and Sehome before the conference season kicks off next week. These two teams were neck and neck in the playoff race last year.
