BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Storm’s ‘big 3’ goes off in win over Sehome
The guards of Squalicum were too much for Sehome, as the Storm pulled away in the second half for a 72-64 non-conference victory on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Sehome High School.
Marcus Montag scored seven of his 23 points for the Mariners (0-2) in the opening period while Squalicum’s Darious Powell connected on two of his six 3-pointers on the night.
Powell finished with a team-high 28 points, while Damek Mitchell scored 18 and Josiah Westbrook tallied 16 for Squalicum (3-0).
“Their big three — Damek, Powell and Westbrook — just killed us,” assistant coach Jordan Chalfant said in a phone interview.

Meridian 47, Burlington-Edison 46: Brady Moore scored 17 points, Camden Burgess had 13 and Derek Campfield added 11 as Meridian pulled off a win Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Burlington-Edison. Burgess had three 3-pointers in the victory. Caleb Sheldon had 12 points for Burlington-Edison and Drew Wesen added eight points.
Ferndale 65, Blaine 42: Ferndale (2-1) used its strong post presence to get past Blaine with a strong night from Austin Honeycutt, who scored 18 points, and John Weg, who scored 12.. Blaine (1-2) was led by Jalen Kortlever, who scored eight points.
They just took over with size really. They took advantage of their big guys inside.

Lynden Christian 71, Sedro-Woolley 47: Nate Hielkema scored 14 points, had a game-high eight rebounds and recorded four steals to lift Lynden Christian to a non-league win over Sedro-Woolley. Jo Meppelink had five points and a game-high nine assists, and Tanner Bouma scored a game-high 15.

Sehome hosts Anacortes at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 in a matchup that should be a strong measuring stick for both teams. Leighton Kingma and Marcus Montag will look to get the Mariners going.
