Lynden Christian an experienced group

The Bellingham Herald

Coach: Roger DeBoer

Last year: Finished tied for seventh in the Northwest Conference with a 7-5 record. ... Ended season after going 3-1 during the Class 1A State Tournament, earning a second-place trophy. ... Finished 18-9 overall.

Players to watch: Josiah Meppelink (sr., G); Jake Poag (sr., G); Zach Roetcisoender (sr., G)

Outlook: One glance of Lynden Christian’s roster, and it’s easy to see what stands out most about the Lyncs. “We are able to do quite a bit of stuff earlier in the year than we have in the past because of the maturity on our team,” Lynden Christian coach Roger DeBoer said. The 2014 1A state runner-ups graduated all-league player Cody Fransen, but the Lyncs’ roster is composed of 10 seniors. Most notable of those is guard Zach Roetcisoender, who last year led LC in scoring with 17.0 points per game. Sharp-shooter Jake Poag (11.9) and point guard Jo Meppelink (3.3) add to Lynden Christian’s immense experience. Tanner Bouma, Nate Hielkema, Lucas Roetcisoender and junior Grant Rubbert round out what DeBoer considers LC’s starting seven. George De Jong, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, gives the Lyncs some much-needed size. “We are not big, and that comes with some limitations,” DeBoer said. “Our season, and the success of that, will be based on how well we can defend.”
