Mariners still have plenty of talent
Coach: Steve Call
Last year: Finished tied for second in the Northwest Conference with a 9-3 record. ... Ended season after finishing 3-1 during the Class 2A State Tournament, earning a fourth-place trophy. ... Finished 20-9 overall.
Players to watch: Leighton Kingma (sr., W); Marcus Montag (jr., W); Logan Deboo (jr., W/P); Eddie Hochsprung (fr., W)
Outlook: Gone is longtime coach AJ LaBree. Gone are talented guards Tanner Patrick and Leif Anderson. Also gone are myriad other seniors who played most of Sehome’s minutes last winter. But even with the losses, the Mariners have plenty of reasons to be optimistic, as new coach Steve Call takes over. Sehome only has one senior, but he is a good one. Leighton Kingma, a 6-foot-6 wing, averaged 13.6 points per game last year while displaying his long-range game and inside presence. Sehome also brings back junior wing Marcus Montag, who averaged 9.5 points per game and has shown an ability to come through when the Mariners need him the most. Also returning is 6-foot-6 wing/post Logan Deboo (4.2 ppg), who has a chance to elevate his game and take another step forward this winter. Freshman wing Eddie Hoschsprung could contribute right away, and junior 6-foot-7 post Ben Malquist gives Sehome great additional size.
