Meridian again turning to defense in 2015-16
Coach: Shane Stacy
Last year: Finished ninth in the Northwest Conference with a 4-8 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 during the Class 1A District Tournament, finishing 13-11 overall.
Players to watch: Daniel Young (sr., F); Derek Campfield (sr., P); Brady Moore (sr., G)
Outlook: Meridian might not own the big-name, flashy scorer this season, but there is something else that stands out to Trojans coach Shane Stacy. “These guys are eager to get better everyday,” Stacy said in a phone interview. “That is the first thing that stands out. ... You might not see it right away, but if we stick with it the eagerness to learn will pay off.” The Trojans move on to life without prolific scorer Alex Martin, but that doesn’t mean Meridian’s approach will be any different. Stacy expects stingy defense again to become a hallmark of the team, and lock-down defense will be even more imperative without the contributions of a major scorer. But Meridian does return three players in seniors Daniel Young (4.6 points per game), Derek Campfield (4.8 ppg) and Brady Moore (3.1) who all logged significant varsity minutes last winter. Stacy may rely on them more early on, and he expects their offensive numbers to improve. Stacy has several players who should turn into good players.
