Ferndale looks to speed things up under new coach in 2015-16
Coach: Jason Owens
Last year: Tied for fifth in the Northwest Conference with an 8-4 record. ... Ended season after going 1-2 during the Class 3A District Tournament, finishing 15-8 overall.
Players to watch: Austin Honeycutt (sr., F); John Weg (sr., F); Riley Hunt (jr., PG); Sky Freeman (jr., G); Dane Larsen (jr. G)
Outlook: New coach Jason Owens is no stranger to Northwest Conference basketball. He previously coached under Monte Walton, knows all the league’s coaches and has 20 years of Whatcom County coaching experience. And with his players, combined with the style of play Owens is looking to implement, Ferndale fans shouldn’t be lacking any excitement this winter. “Our motto is play with passion, play with purpose and play for each other,” Owens said in a phone interview. “I’m trying to transition from a walk-it-up, play-halfcourt sets to more pressure defense and an up-tempo game.” Junior guards Sky Freeman, Riley Hunt and Dane Larsen will be paramount in implementing that style, but Ferndale brings back what could become arguably the league’s best frontcourt with 6-foot-4 Austin Honeycutt (19.4 points per game) and 6-8 John Weg (13.2 ppg). Ferndale will use a 10-man rotation.
