PREP GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: New coach tries to break Squalicum’s five-year postseason absence

Last year: Finished season 9-11 and 4-8 in the Northwest Conference. ... At one point won four of six games before losing the last three games of the year to miss the postseason for the fifth straight season.

Outlook: Returning your top two scorers is always a good thing and the Storm not only get senior point guard Sarah Hulbert and sophomore Chalae Wolters back, Squalicum adds to it a coach who has experience winning. Vic Wolffis is the Storm’s new coach this season and has two boys’ state titles under his belt. After missing out on the postseason for the fifth straight season, Wolffis and his squad are hoping they break that streak this year. “I feel good about their chances. I think we have a solid group of athletes,” Wolffis said in a phone interview. “In a way, we’re young and I’m really excited about the possibilities.” Joining Hulbert and Wolters are interior players and seniors Hailey Linville and Hannah Kohr, who both take on larger roles this season. With so much height and talent inside, the Storm are going to be tough to play against. The focus, though, will be on the defensive end. “We have to be great in the halfcourt,” Wolffis said. “I know over the years, if you want to compete with the best, you better be able to defend straight up when it’s execution time.”
