PREP GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Sehome trying to prove last season wasn’t fluke
Coach: Kim Kirk
Last year: Finished 9-16 overall and 4-8 in the Northwest Conference. ... Qualified for the district tournament by winning three of last five games. ... Went 2-2 in the district tournament to shock nearly everyone and qualify for state. ... Lost to Sammamish 51-37 in regional round to end season.
Players to watch: Sarah Eissess (so., P), Samantha Hruby (jr., G), Madison MacPhee (jr., P)
Outlook: The Mariners’ electrifying run last season will be hard to replicate but the youth of this team is undoubtedly a positive. The lone senior on the team, Devin Grahn, will miss the year after tearing her ACL over the summer, making this an all underclassmen team. But don’t make the mistake of thinking the Mariners are inexperienced. “We have a lot of great returners from last year,” coach Kim Kirk said in a phone interview. “They don’t want last year to be a fluke so they’re working really hard.” Heading the returning members are Sarah Eissess — a 6-foot post — Samantha Hruby — a talented point guard — and Madison MacPhee — who returns from a knee injury as a strong post player. With big posts and a lot of youthful promise, this team’s focus will be on halfcourt defense. “And then hopefully we can execute on other end,” Kirk said. They do that and the Mariners might be playoff bound again.
