PREP GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Lynden Christian still an NWC power
Coach: Brady Bomber
Last year: Followed up Class 1A state championship with 22-5 record and undefeated 12-0 Northwest Conference record, winning the NWC crown. ... Went 2-1 at the district and bi-district tournaments to qualify for 11th straight state berth. ... Went 3-1 at state — 2-1 in Yakima — to take home Class 1A fourth-place trophy.
Players to watch: Kara Bajema (sr., F), Haley Hollander (sr., F), Avery Dykstra (so., G)
Outlook: The Lyncs may have lost a couple key components from last year’s state squad but there’s no reason to think they won’t be among the top teams in the Northwest Conference yet again. Kara Bajema (15.5 points per game) is one of the top players in the league and returns for another season. She’ll be without strong post Sara Dougan and defensive-minded Makayla Lancaster but there are plenty of capable replacements. Avery Dykstra will take over ballhandling duties and Sam Van Loo and Riley Van Hulzen will be big players in the post while Haley Hollander (7.5) will take on a larger role. With different personnel comes some different tactics for LC. “We’re going to have a more free-flowing offense,” coach Brady Bomber said in a phone interview. But that won’t come at the expense of stopping opponents — the Lyncs’ strongsuit last year.
