PREP GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW: New-look Ferndale has many holes to fill
Coach: Mike Ivy
Last year: Finished the year 18-5 with a 9-3 Northwest Conference record. ... Won 12 straight games at one point before losing last two heading into district tournament. ... Went 1-2 at districts, ending season with 77-53 loss to Edmonds-Woodway.
Players to watch: Darrien Camarillo (jr., G), Gabrielle Edison (sr., P), Juliana Gholam (sr., G)
Outlook: Most of last year’s team has departed the Golden Eagles due to graduation, leaving a new cast of players that hasn’t gotten much time on the court the past few seasons. The top returners are Gabrielle Edison, who started alongside four-year star Linsey Honeycutt, and Darrien Camarillo, who flashed glimpses of brilliance last season in a backup point guard role. But the two only combined for less than 10 points per game and are really the only two that earned significant playing time. The Golden Eagles, though, haven’t had a losing season in a decade and always find ways to replace talent. While this year they might not be conference championship contenders, Camarillo and Edison are good enough to make Ferndale a difficult out. Ferndale also brings in some sizable freshmen in 5-foot-10 Rylee Weg, 6-1 Nicole Guessford and 5-11 Morgan Barlean. They’ll need the trio to rebound well to make up for the loss of Honeycutt, who was the best player on the glass in the league last season.
