The Northwest Conference was well represented in the inaugural preseason Cloud 9 Top 9 high school boys’ basketball poll released by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association on Tuesday, Nov. 4, as nearly half the league’s 13 teams were ranked.

Leading the way was Squalicum, which was ranked No. 2 in the Class 2A rankings behind only top-ranked Clarkston. Joining the Storm were No. 4 Lynden, No. 6 Anacortes and No. 8 Sehome. The Northwest District figures to be ultra-competitive this winter, especially when you factor in that Archbishop Murphy is ranked No. 9 and the district receives only three berths to the regional round of the state tournament this year.

And don’t forget about a 1A race, which will include No. 3 Lynden Christian and No. 5 Mount Baker, who were ranked behind No. 1 King’s.

Defending state champion Lummi was ranked No. 8 in the Class 1B poll, while Federal Way (4A), Rainier Beach (3A), Brewster (2B) and Almira-Coulee-Hartline were the top-ranked teams in their respective classifications.

The Northwest Conference is scheduled to kick off the season in a little less than a month on Dec. 1.
