Three Whatcom County baseball players earn first-team all-state honors

Ferndale junior Matt James, Lynden senior Jordan Wittenberg and Squalicum senior Ernie Yake received first-team all-state honors from the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association, according to a news release June 27.

James, a catcher, was selected to the Class 3A first team after helping the Golden Eagles go 15-8 and reach the 3A Northwest District Tournament. He hit .482 with 19 runs, 32 RBIs, four home runs and seven doubles.

Wittenberg and Yake were selected to the Class 2A first team. Wittenberg, a pitcher/infielder, helped the Lions go 19-4 and reach the 2A state quarterfinals last month, while Yake, a shortstop who hit for a .525 average with 24 RBIs and 16 stolen bases, helped the Storm go 12-8 last spring.

Ferndale senior outfielder/pitcher Kyle Sandstrom (.459, 27 runs, 12 RBIs, three doubles) and Bellingham infielder Austin Shenton (.472, 7 RBI, 6 stolen bases, one homer) earned second-team honors.
