Squalicum’s Yake named All-NWC baseball Most Valuable Player

Squalicum senior shortstop Ernie Yake has been selected All-Northwest Conference Most Valuable Player by the league’s baseball coaches, according to a release Wednesday, May 25.

It marked the second straight year Yake has been selected to the first team. Yake hit .525 with nine doubles, three triples, a homer, 24 RBI and 16 stolen bases. He also committed only one error all year.

Joining him on the first team were Ferndale catcher junior Matt James and senior outfielder Kyle Sandstrom, Lynden senior shortstop Jordan Wittenberg and sophomore outfielder/pitcher Trevin Hope, Bellingham senior third baseman Austin Shenton, Blaine senior first baseman/pitcher Josh Fakkema, Sehome junior outfielder Felix Zavisubin and Burlington-Edison sophomore catcher Hunter Anderson and senior outfielder/pitcher Derek Cherryholmes.

Nooksack Valley senior Noah Rawls and Anacortes senior Joe Brennan were the first-team pitchers.

Whatcom County players on the second team included Blaine’s Brenden Riddle, Lynden Christian’s Tyson Cline, Meridian’s Brady Moore and Derek Campfield, Sehome’s Shane Jamison, Ferndale, Max Jeffery, Squalicum’s Connor Sage and Lynden’s Anthony Garcia.

Blaine’s Larry Hoffman and Burlington-Edison’s John Thurmond shared Coach of the Year honors.
