Bats don’t wake up in time for Pioneers
By the time Nooksack Valley started stringing hits together it had already lost both games of a doubleheader against Chelan 12-2 and 13-6 on Saturday, April 9.
In game one, the Pioneers scored twice in the first inning but were then held scoreless until the game was decided in the sixth inning. Sophomore Kyle Veldman hit a home run and Mike Jackson was 3 for 3 with the other RBI.
Game two started with two more runs by Nooksack Valley but then Chelan scored 11 unanswered runs, and not even a four-run sixth inning could make up the difference. Despite a disappointing weekend, coach Scott Gelwicks said there are positives to take from it.
“We lost some focus, but the good thing is our bats are waking up,” Gelwicks said. “We took a number of freshman with us and it was a good way to test ourselves against other teams.”
