Prep baseball roundup: Golden Eagles roll in season opener
Junior Matt James went 3 for 3 with six RBI, a grand slam and a run scored in the Ferndale baseball team’s 11-1 victory in five innings at home over Anacortes in the Golden Eagles first action of the spring.
“(James) was seeing it pretty well and put a good stroke on all three of his official plate appearances today,” Ferndale coach Donny Hennigs said in a phone interview.
Mason Shaw (1-0) pitched four innings, giving up two hits, striking out seven and giving up no walks.
Also at the plate, Max Jeffery was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs and Kyle Sandstrom was 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs.
Hennigs said Ferndale considers defense a key to its success but the team committed five errors. He said that is something that will work itself out.
“There were a couple fluke things that happened that we didn’t handle very well,” he said.
Other results
Blaine 4, Sedro-Woolley 1: Sophomore Jon Gunderson earned a win in his first varsity start, and Jalen Kortlever drove in two runs to help Blaine top Sedro-Woolley. The Borderites scored two runs in the first and two in the second and limited the Cubs to four hits.
