1A track athletes fail to medal on 1st day of state

Lynden Christian’s Sarah Ball finished fifth in the 3,200-meter final during the Class 1A State Championships on Thursday, May 26, at Eastern Washington University.

Ball ran in 11 minutes, 21.62 seconds which beat her second place 11:22.22 during last week’s Bi-District final. Coach Kent De Hoog said Ball is a good competitor and was disappointed in her time.

“You never know what to expect,” De Hoog said. “You look at times and marks but it’s tough to know going in.”

Brooks DeWaard of Lynden Christian finished 11th in the 1,600-meter final with a time of 4:40.77.

De Hoog said none of the athletes competing Thursday were favored in their events but that it was good they got to experience what state is like. DeWaard is a junior making his first appearance at state.

Nooksack’s Amy Jo Murphy placed ninth in the 3,200 with a time of 11:55.17.

Meridian’s Marcus McGuinn (40.79) and Aaron Bosscher (41.28) of Nooksack Valley finished second and third in the 300-hurdles prelims to advance to the state finals.
