Bellingham’s Alex Ferrier won the individual Class 2A Northwest District Girls’ Golf Tournament title by 13 strokes and led the Red Raiders to a team title on Tuesday, May 17. Results from the tournament were not available until Wednesday, May 18.
Ferrier followed up her 86 from Monday, May 16, at Snohomish Golf and Country Club with a 75 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 161 to beat out second-place Jade Ming (174) of Lynden. Bellingham teammate Sophia Schmidt (175) was third.
The Red Raiders claimed the team title with 128.5 points, beating out Shorecrest’s 100.
Bellingham sends three to state
Ferrier and Schmidt will be joined by teammate Emma Lochridge, who finished fifth at 180. Sarah Gibb nearly made it four, as she finished just 3 strokes behind a tie for 18th, which was the cut to qualify for state.
Storm also sending three
Squalicum matched Bellingham by having three golfers qualify for state — Christina Kim (eighth, 187), Jordan Flannery (17th, 202) and Melanie Zehnder (tied for 18th, 204). Zehnder beat Lakewood’s Bailey Dixon in a playoff to claim the district’s final trip to state. Squalicum’s Josie Andert was a stroke behind the tie for 18th. The Storm finished third with 87 points.
The seven Whatcom County qualifiers head to the Class 2A State Championships to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24-25, at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland.
