Eight Whatcom County girls’ tennis players qualified for next week’s state tournament during the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament on Tuesday, May 17, at Sehome High School.
Squalicum’s Catherine Michelutti earned the top seed in the singles bracket with a win over Kassidee Beuse of Sedro-Woolley 6-0, 6-1. In the consolation bracket, Sehome’s Ali Morrow defeated Nicole McInemy from Anacortes 6-1, 6-1 and then knocked off her teammate Sidney Balfour 6-0, 6-0 to claim the final seed.
The doubles team of Lauren Smith and Andrea Zucchi of Sehome defeated Bellingham’s Ellie Iwersen and Oriana LoCicero 6-1, 6-3 to snag the top seed for state. Bellingham will have two doubles teams represented at state as the pairing of Sophia Lawrence and Alice Hiebert won twice in the consolation bracket to earn the third seed.
Sehome earned the district team title with 22 points and Bellingham finished second with 11 points.
