Squalicum’s Catherine Michelutti claimed the Class 2A North Sub-District Girls’ Tennis Tournament singles title on Monday, May 9, at Sehome High School, beating Sedro-Woolley’s Kassidee Beuse 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match.
Michelutti dropped only eight games in four matches on her way to the title.
Sehome’s Lauren Smith and Andrea Zucchi claimed the doubles crown with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bellingham’s Ellie Iwersen and Oriana LoCicero.
“They played well,” Sehome coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. “They’re a strong team, but they’ve got a lot of strong competition ahead of them. Every time they play they’re playing stronger.”
In the consolation bracket, Bellingham’s Sophia Lawrence and Alice Hiebert beat Sehome’s Hailey Holland and Sydney Leiweke 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the third-place match. They will face Sehome’s Mia Zucchi and Beth Clawson, who beat Anacortes’ Wendy Mathias and Alice Reidel 6-3, 6-2. Holland and Leiweke will face Mathias and Reidel in the fifth-place match when action resumes at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10.
In singles, Ali Morrow beat Burlington-Edison’s Eleanore Sammeth 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the third-place match. She will face Anacortes’ Nicole McInerney, who beat Sehome’s Sidney Balfour 6-2, 6-2. Balfour will face Sammeth in the fifth-place match.
The top six finishers in each draw will advance to the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament, which is scheduled to begin Monday, May 16, at Sehome.
