Anacortes baseball hands Squalicum a 1-0 defeat

Two of the top teams in the Northwest Conference battled it out but Anacortes came up with the only needed run in a 1-0 Northwest Conference victory over Squalicum on Friday, March 25, at Joe Martin Field.

“Anacortes is a very good team. Their pitcher (Joe Brennan) was solid. We couldn’t get a big hit when we needed it,” Squalicum coach John Inge said in a phone interview. “It was an electrifying atmosphere for a game in the middle of March.”

Ernie Yake was the tough-luck loser giving up four hits and one run with four strikeouts and only giving up one walk in a complete game.

Yake also had two of Squalicum’s four hits, and Bunji McLoud and Jack Boysen each had a hit.

Ferndale 12, Lynden Christian 1 (5): The Golden Eagles scored nine runs in the fourth inning en route to the victory in five innings. Jake Leavitt was 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBI, Cory Slaughter was 2 for 3 with a run and a double and Kyler Schemstad was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Mason Shaw (2-0) pitched a complete game with five strikeouts, two walks and only gave up an unearned run.

Burlington-Edison 2, Sehome 1: Felix Zabisubin (1-2) pitched a complete game, giving up two runs, striking out four and walking none but it wasn’t enough for the Mariners. Jake Manson was 1 for 2 with a stolen base and Dylan Harper and Kealohi Grondin both went 1 for 3 for Sehome.

Sedro-Woolley 12, Mount Baker 2: No other information available at press time.
