Smith places first for Mountaineers

Natalie Smith placed first in the 120 weight class for Mount Baker at the Othello Girls’ Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 16.

“(Smith) had a rough semifinal match but bounced back and pinned the girl in the finals,” Mount Baker coach Clyde Blockley said in a phone interview.

Mount Baker came in second overall in team scoring at 141. Sunnyside was first at 156 points.

Lynden was fourth as a team with 115 points.

For Mount Baker Korban Cadle (125) and Akemi Schwinden (235) each placed second. Marissa Amarando (135), Anissa Camacho (145) and Rachael Nichols (155) placed third.

Thalia Veliz (190) placed second for Lynden.

Other results

Viking Girls Invitational: Sehome girls’ wrestling scored eight points and Sydney Cone placed fifth in the 135-weight class. Squalicum girls’ scored two points with Ivon Sanchez winning one round in the 110-weight class.

Boys’ basketball:

Blaine boys’ basketball won 77-71 over Nathan Hale in overtime on Jan. 16.

Shaq Woods led Blaine with 22 points and 18 rebounds. Kier Munzanreder followed with 13 points and led in assists.

TJ Williams and Kateel Barnett led Nathan Hale with 10 points each.
