BOYS’ WRESTLING ROUNDUP: Borderites’ Magallon earns first tournament championship

Blaine had two champions at the Panther Classic on Saturday, Jan. 9, in Snohomish. Senior Caleb Frey (152 pounds) and sophomore Saul Magallon (195 pounds) won championship titles.

“The biggest highlight of the tournament was Saul winning his first tournament championship,” Blaine coach Craig Foster said in a phone interview.

Magallon beat Lynden wrestler Brody Weinheimer for the title.

Coming in second place for Blaine were Colton Economy (126 pounds), Derreck Camba (132) and Riley Frisch (160). In third were Anthony Frey (132 pounds) and Tristan Alanis (182 pounds). Aidan Button (138 pounds) placed fifth.

Burlington-Edison Duels: Sehome went 2-1 on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Burlington-Edison Team Duels. The Mariners beat Lakewood and Jackson but lost to Marysville-Pilchuck. Davis Canfield-Cole went 3-0 for Sehome. Briley Funk had three pins, Zach Zimmerman had two pins and a forfeit and Suan Tung went 2-1.

Sky Valley Invitational: Mount Baker finished seventh out of 15 teams on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Sky Valley Invitational in Sultan. Jeremiah Cronk (152 pounds) placed first for Mount Baker. Jacob DeCook (195) and Braxton Shannon (220) each placed third and Jesus Torrero (132) placed fifth.

Nooksack Valley will host Meridian at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Then, Sehome will host Lynden, Bellingham will host Squalicum, Anacortes will host Mount Baker and Ferndale will host Blaine at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
