Swimmers to watch in boys’ season
Joseph Adams
Sehome, Sr., breaststroke/relays
Last year, Adams swam the second legs of Sehome’s state 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays. The latter nearly broke a record on its way to a state championship. He also placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke at the Class 2A State Championships and should again be a big part of a strong Sehome team.
Wilson Dierdorff
Squalicum, Jr., diving
Diving is often a difference-maker in district and state meets and the Storm have one of the best divers in the conference on its side. Dierdorff finished third at the Class 2A State Championships last year, helping the Storm finish 11th, and building off his ninth-place state finish his freshman year.
Colin Hakeman
Sehome, Sr., freestyle
As a junior, Hakeman finished 10th at the Class 2A State Championships in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 500 freestyle. The long-distance freestyler assisted Sehome to a second-place team finish at state and was the top 500 freestyle swimmer in the conference. He should be a big boost again this season for the Mariners.
Jonathan Hegeberg
Squalicum, Sr., breaststroke/relays
Hegeberg anchored two relays at state last year and was the third leg on another. None of those teams made the championship race but Hegeberg’s return offers hope of another strong set of relay teams. He also took 11th in the breaststroke at state and the Storm followed suit taking the same position as a team.
Brisen Pearson
Bellingham, jr., freestyle/butterfly
Pearson enters his junior year with state experience under his belt — he finished 11th in the 50 freestyle and 10th in the 100 butterfly at the Class 2A State Championships last season. He’ll be a big part of a Red Raiders team that doesn’t return one of the league’s top swimmers Martin Sloley.
