Squalicum swim snags 8 of 12 All-NWC first-team spots
Squalicum’s girls’ swim team came just points away from winning a Class 2A state championship and got rewarded for the effort on the All-Northwest Conference team, which was released Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The Storm took home eight of the possible 12 first-team spots.
Both the 200 medley relay, composed of Serena Allendorfer, Yanran Le, Olivia Nielsen and Tiana Varang, and 400 freestyle relay team, of Allendorfer, Sophie Booth, Nielsen and Varang, won first-team honors.
Those teams were joined on the first team by Le in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke, Varang in the 50 freestyle, Amber Caron on the diving board, Nielsen in the 100 butterfly and Allendorfer in the 100 freestyle.
The Storm also had Nielsen in the 200 IM, Allendorfer in the 50 free and Varang in the 100 free take home second-team honors. The Storm also swept the diving honors with Helene Synnott and Jordan Cucksey taking home second and third-team spots, respectively.
Anacortes, the state’s third-place team, had two first-team spots — Faith Fostvedt in the 200 freestyle and the Seahawks 200 freestyle relay team — while Lynden and Sehome each took home one first-team honor.
For the Mariners — who finished fifth at state — the first-teamer was Alia Malella in the 500 freestyle, while Sarah Hollander’s 100 backstroke performance this season was good enough for the Lions to get a first-teamer. Hollander also earned a 500 freestyle second-team selection.
Sehome had four second-teamers — the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams along with Malella’s 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke.
Bellingham’s mentions on the team came in the form of two third-team spots given to exchange student Gitte Gosvig in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Ferndale earned one second-team spot with Kyrie Fairbairn’s time in the 200 free.
