Lynden Christian volleyball wins Class 1A Bi-District Championship
Lynden Christian volleyball won the Class 1A Bi-District Championship with a 3-0 victory over Annie Wright on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The team was ready to play and excited to get back out on the court, Lynden Christian coach Kim Grycel said in a phone interview.
“It was a great team win, our first Bi-District win since 2009,” she said. “It was a very exciting game.”
There was a long week of waiting for Lynden Christian leading up to the game against Annie Wright. Lynden Christian led going into the 1A Bi-District Tournament after their 3-0 win over King’s on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Lyncs’ record is 15-2 overall going into state.
Kara Bajama led Lynden Christian with 14 kills and four aces. Hannah Rusnak followed with 8 kills and three aces. Emmalee Bailey led with 11 digs and Karli Tjoelker earned 23 assists.
Rusnak played a very consistent game, Grycel said. She had no hitting errors while earning those eight kills.
Bajama stepped up in the championship game as well, leading with her hits and also in serves.
Lynden Christian graduated seven seniors coming into this season and as a result there has been a lot of development in the new players and youth, Grycel said.
“We have four freshman on varsity and three sophomores who have taken on more of a role,” she said. “It’s great to get them over to Yakima and get them more experience there.”
The bracket for state will come out Sunday, Nov. 8.
“We just have to wait and see who we will take on first and start planning for that,” Grycel said.
