Lyncs lose 9-0, move on to elimination in 1A district soccer

Lynden Christian girls’ soccer lost 9-0 against King’s in the second round of Class 1A Northwest District playoffs on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Kings High School.

“It was 1-0 at half. We felt like we didn’t do a good job of defending that goal, which was something we could work on in the second half,” Lyncs coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. “But then they got those three early ones after halftime and the wheels kind of fell off from there.”

Once King’s realized the Lyncs were wavering, they finished aggressively, earning eight goals in the second half.

Katie Stella earned a hat trick for King’s. Suzanne Konswa also scored twice for King’s.

Kait Heeringa had a rough night in the net for the Lyncs as nine of 13 shots on goal from King’s scored.

“Thirteen shots is a lot,” De Ruyter said. “But to convert nine of them is a great percentage.”

Lynden Christian’s defense made a strong effort against King’s attacking offense, it just wasn’t enough, De Ruyter said.

“I thought that Libby Hielkema played incredibly hard as centerback for us tonight,” he said. “And Adrianna Patlan made a fantastic effort off the bench tonight.”

The season is not over for the Lyncs as they move on to an elimination round on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Whatcom Community College. The game will be against Mount Baker for a place at Bi-District. The last time Lynden Christian played Mount Baker, Oct. 6, it was a 0-0 tie.

Hopefully those two will be back and ready to go on Saturday, De Ruyter said. The Lyncs have two days to recover from the game against King’s and get ready for the Mount Baker rematch.
