Sehome boys’ tennis set to play for singles, doubles district title
Sehome’s Max Shmotolokha beat Sedro-Woolley’s Kyle Beuse 6-1, 6-0 in a singles semifinal of the Class 2A Northwest District Tournament on Monday, Oct. 19, at Sehome High School, putting him in the final, which if he wins will guarantee him a berth to the Class 2A State Tennis Tournament in the spring.
Shmotolokaha will face Shorecrest’s Emahd Khan who beat Bellingham’s Austin Shenton 6-1, 6-3. Shenton then beat Archbishop Murphy’s Houston Schmutz 6-1, 6-2 and will face Beuse, who defeated Sehome’s William Zahng 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, for a chance to play in the second-place match, the winner of which will receive the second state berth from the district.
In doubles play, Sehome’s Shane Lynette and Reece Gilbert defeated Bellingham’s Henry Ziels and Zach Nolan 6-1, 6-3 in a semifinal to earn a spot in the final, where they will face Shorecrest’s Daniel Wacker and Faiz Kahn in the final. Wacker and Kahn beat Squalicum’s Colin Weller and Kevin Smiley 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the other semifinal.
Ziels and Nolan, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 winners over Sehome’s Henry Han and Dane Faris later Monday, will face Weller and Smiley, who advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Anacortes’ Ryan Campbell and Derek Vance. The winning team will play for second place and a state berth.
Tournament action will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at Treasure Valley Community College in Mount Vernon.
