Coach: Katie Emmons
Last year: Went 4-14 overall and 3-9 in the Northwest Conference (10th). ... Qualified for the Class 1A District Tournament but went 1-2 in the tourney, both losses coming to King’s in straight sets. ... Did top South Whidbey 3-2 in the postseason.
Players to watch: Brianna Turner (MB, Sr.), Olivia Berkan (OH, Sr.), Katrina Gimmaka (MB, So.)
Outlook: The Pioneers are young, but coach Katie Emmons has been impressed early on with the leadership of the upperclassmen. Led by Brianna Turner and Olivia Berkan, the seniors have been able to hold themselves to high standards while expecting the same from their teammates, Emmons said in a phone interview. “They work so hard and lead by example. It makes their teammates work hard.” One of those young stars in the making is 5-foot-11 Katrina Gimmaka, who gives the Pioneers a ton of height inside combined with the 6-1 Turner. If the Pioneers have one thing on their side, it’s athleticism. Many of the names seen on the roster are found on other Pioneers’ rosters throughout the year. “We are really athletic. I’m hoping we can come together as a team by the end of the season,” Emmons said. “Every year, it’s a brand new team. That’s kind of how it works.” Emmons noted that this team isn’t going to have one superstar but should benefit from a balanced attack in an effort to make the postseason and try to make state, which is the goal every season.
