Hull, Davis overwhelm Sumner in 4A state championship game
Davis sophomore guard Cheyenne Hull felt she owed Sumner a thank you. After Sumner traveled to Yakima and defeated top-seeded Davis in the 4A state tournament regional round last weekend, it lit a fire under Davis’ team.
So when the rematch rolled around in the 4A state championship game on Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome, Hull and her teammates were ready. They had been ready all day and all week, in fact.
“I was very motivated,” Hull said. “I definitely wanted to get my get-back in this game we did.”
Davis jumped all over Sumner from the start and buried the Spartans, running away with a 61-45 win.
“(Hull) was ready to play that game at about 7 a.m. this morning,” Davis coach Akil White said. “She got that look in her eye.”
That was bad news for Sumner. Hull was in the zone, scoring a game-high 26 points, including a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point range. Every time it seemed like there was a sliver of hope for a Sumner run, Hull buried another shot from deep.
In last weekend’s regional loss to Sumner, Hull fouled out in the fourth quarter. She said she felt like she let her team down.
“I didn’t really control my emotions,” she said. “They came back and played great team ball in that whole game and we finished this game strong.”
Sophomore Kawehi Borden paced the Spartans with 24 points, Parker Gould added 10 and Olivia Collins chipped in seven. Davis guard Nevaeh Parrish scored 15 for the Pirates. Davis shot 44 percent from the field, compared to Sumner’s 36 percent.
“Credit to Davis, they shot the ball well and hit shots when they needed to hit shots,” Sumner coach Katie Hyppa said. “I thought we missed a couple shots early on in the game that hurt our momentum.”
Davis returns the bulk of its roster next season and should return as the favorite for consecutive titles, although the Pirates will face competition from Sumner, Woodinville and others again. Hull is confident Saturday night was the start of something special.
“I think we’re gonna come back the next two years and get it again,” she said.
Sumner, which has made deep state tournament runs the past few years, settles for a runner-up finish.
“I’m grateful to coach them, they’re an awesome group,” Hyppa said. “I’m so proud of how they represent our town, our community, the valley and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”
