Game on: State basketball previews for 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B tournaments in Yakima, Spokane
The Tacoma Dome hosts four state basketball tournaments this week — Class 4A boys and girls and Class 3A boys and girls — but the remainder of the South Sound’s high-school programs trek across the Cascades for state hoops in Yakima and Spokane.
Class 2A and 1A programs battle for a title inside the Yakima Valley SunDome, and the state’s 2B and 1B schools take to Spokane Arena to crown a champion. The Round of 12 begins Wednesday, trimming a field of dozen down to eight. Quarterfinals are held Thursday, semifinals are Friday, and state championships commence Saturday, along with placing games.
Here’s a deeper look at brackets, schedules and local contenders in small school state tournaments:

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 12 Franklin Pierce (20-4) — Watching Cardinals star Javon Barbee in Yakima this week? Grab some popcorn, settle in, and enjoy the show. The state’s leader in points (682) tormented 2A SPSL rivals with 28-9-3-3 averages this season, becoming Franklin Pierce’s all-time leading scorer with 1,713 career points in Friday’s regional win over No. 13 Bainbridge. Barbee and junior wing Hakeen Collins account for nearly 45 points per game, powering the Cardinals to 16 wins in their last 17 games. The only loss? No. 3 Bremerton, their quarterfinals opponent if Franklin Pierce advances through the 2A Round of 12.

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 11 Eatonville (22-4) — It all starts with senior point guard Bailey Andersen, and for good reason: Eatonville’s all-time leading scorer (boys or girls) stuffs the stat sheet with 22.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.4 rebounds and 4.7 steals per game. The Cruisers rose from 1A last offseason and obliterated their new league, rolling to 14-0 record in the 2A SPSL. Look for senior Lillian Bickford (12.5 PPG, 8.9 RPG) in the post when Eatonville aims for its 14th win in 15 games.

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 1 Annie Wright (20-2) — It’s championship or bust for perhaps the best team in the state, regardless of classification. Annie Wright shocked Rainier Beach – the 3A tournament’s No. 1 seed – on the road in Nov. 30’s season opener, 74-70, and routinely crushed their 1A Nisqually rivals by 30+ points. Senior guard and 2024 TNT All-Area pick Jeremiah Harshman is one of the area’s top players once again, and the tournament’s best starting five includes Indiana State commit Martin Kaupanger, Tenino transfer Noah Schow, and four-year guard Reggie Lester. Annie Wright fell to Zillah in last year’s 1A championship on a last-second shot. Do they claim revenge in 2025?

SOUTH SOUND CONTENDERS
No. 5 Annie Wright (20-6) — Junior guard Aaliyeh Martin and senior forward J’Lyn Doodigian power these state tournament regulars back to Yakima for a fifth-straight year. A win in Wednesday’s Round of 12 would lift the Gators into the 1A quarterfinals with No. 6 Seton Catholic, a team they beat earlier this season, 42-40. Annie Wright toppled every Tacoma team on their schedule in 2024-25: Silas (60-31), Lincoln (68-27), and Life Christian Academy (62-29).
