Day 1: Top performers from 1B, 1A, 3A state football championships at Husky Stadium
The Class 1B, 1A and 3A high school football state championship games are being played Friday at Husky Stadium in Seattle. The 2B, 2A and 4A championship games will be held Saturday. Here are a few of the top performers from Day 1.
CLASS 1B
Final score: No. 2 Wilbur-Creston-Keller 42, No. 1 Liberty Christian 34
Total offense: WCK 439 yards; LC 271.
Top performers: Wilbur-Creston-Keller racked up 416 of its 439 yards of offense on the ground, passing the ball just three times in the win. The workhorse was Preston Michel, who rushed 35 times for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Teammate Kallen Maioho also rushed for a pair of touchdowns, tallying 96 yards on 26 carries. For Liberty Christian, running back Charlie Branning rushed 14 times for 179 yards and three touchdowns in the loss.
Numbers tell the story: Wilbur-Creston-Keller had an incredible 40 minutes, 31 seconds of possession time, compared to just 7 minutes, 29 seconds from Liberty Christian. WCK converted 14-of-19 third-down conversions, 4-of-5 fourth down conversions and scored on all six of its trips to the red zone.
Did you know? The title is the first for Wilbur-Creston-Keller’s program. The program came close last year, finishing runner-up, losing to Liberty Bell in the title game.
CLASS 1A
Final score: No. 1 Royal 61, No. 2 Seton Catholic 28
Total offense: Royal 469 yards; Seton Catholic 318 yards
Top performers: Royal QB Lance Allred was unstoppable on Friday night, racking up seven touchdowns. He rushed for 203 yards and six touchdowns on 21 carries and completed 15-of-21 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in the win. Shea Stevenson (89 yards) and Jackson Larsen (70 yards, TD) were Allred’s top targets in the passing game. For Seton Catholic, Ryker Ruelas caught a pair of touchdown passes and had 55 receiving yards on six receptions.
Numbers tell the story: Royal forced four turnovers in the win, intercepting Seton Catholic QB Kolten Gesser three times and Joe Callerame once.
Did you know? That’s Royal’s fifth state championship in a row. The Knights have now won eight of the last nine Class 1A state titles.
Class 3A
Final score: No. 2 O’Dea 38, No. 1 Bellevue 15
Total offense: O’Dea 348 yards; Bellevue 258 yards
Top performers: O’Dea running back Uriah Stringfield put on a show, rushing for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. He also had two catches for 53 yards and another score. Defensively, linebacker King Allah led the Irish with 14 tackles, had a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Bellevue’s Ryken Moon caught two passes for 90 yards and added 45 yards on 16 carries.
Numbers tell the story: Bellevue converted just two of its 11 third down attempts in the loss and had four turnovers: three fumbles and an interception.
Did you know? The win tied longtime O’Dea coach Monte Kohler with legendary Tumwater coach Sid Otton for the most wins in state history (394).
