‘Voice for Whatcom County sports’ in Bellingham dies, radio stations announce
Mark Scholten, a beloved and long-time sportscaster died Monday in Bellingham, radio station KPUG announced in a Facebook post. He was 54.
According to a KGMI article, Scholten was found dead of natural causes in his apartment.
Scholten, who was born and raised in Bellingham, was a sports anchor for KPUG AM-1170 and KGMI 97.9 FM for decades. He began his career in 1992 and co-hosted “The Zone,” a local sports talk show.
“KPUG is heartbroken to announce that our very own Mark Scholten passed away this weekend. Mark was an anchor in the local community and the voice for Whatcom County sports. His presence with KPUG and passion for radio will be irreplaceable,” KPUG said in the Facebook post.
Scholten was known for his knowledge of and dedication to Whatcom County high school teams, their coaches and athletes, KGMI said in the article.
On Scholten’s about you page, he said he wanted to play professional sports but lacked the talent for it, so he decided to commit his career to full-time radio. Scholten has been the radio voice of high school competitions in Whatcom County for many years.
