Smith leads deep cast of Sehome selections

The Sehome girls’ tennis team won another state title this spring with 33 team points, and the individuals were rewarded as seven Mariners landed on the All-Northwest Conference Girls’ Tennis team.

Junior Lauren Smith dominated singles play all season long and put together a brilliant postseason run before taking a narrow loss in the Class 2A State Tournament title match to North Kitsap’s Danya Wallis.

Smith was selected the NWC’s Most Valuable Player.

Teammates Andrea Clawson, Simone Hall and Taylor Harris were first-tema picks, while Ali Morrow, Natalie Knops and Andrea Zucchi were second-team selections.

Clawson placed fourth in state playing singles, and doubles partners Hall and Harris lost to Squalicum’s Kim Dorr and Rachel Door in the 2A championship game.

Knops and Zucchi took home third place in state doubles.

Both Dorr sisters earned first-team honors. They engineered a strong postseason to follow up on a perfect regular season to take the Class 2A State Tournament doubles crown.

Other Whatcom County first-team picks included Bellingham’s Ellie Iwersen and Blaine’s Saskia Dolk.

Second-team selections included Squalicum’s Sarah Byron, Bellingham teammates Mariah Miller and Oriana LoCicero and Ferndale standout Carly Bannerman.
