Huskies notes: Travis Feeney’s chase-down tackle kept OSU from scoring in the first half

Keishawn Bierria missed the tackle that allowed Paul Lucas to escape and scoot up the sideline, so he had particular interest in seeing teammate Travis Feeney chase Lucas down and prevent him from scoring a touchdown.

Interest, and unwavering faith.

“I’m just like, ‘Trav’s going to catch him,’ ” Bierria said after Washington’s 52-7 victory against Oregon State on Saturday at Reser Stadium. “I already knew he was going to catch him. That’s just what he does.”

Feeney, UW’s star senior linebacker, did catch Lucas, and pushed him out of bounds at UW’s 8-yard line after Lucas had gained 76 yards.

The Huskies already led 21-0, and were dominating so thoroughly that an OSU score likely wouldn’t have influenced the outcome. But Feeney sprinted after Lucas nonetheless, and his tackle wound up keeping the Beavers off the scoreboard completely: they followed with three incomplete passes and a holding penalty, then missed the subsequent 36-yard field goal.

“Travis is fast, and when I saw Travis take off, I thought he was going to get him, but then I know that ballcarrier is really fast,” UW coach Chris Petersen said. “I watched him last week at Cal, and he can really go. I didn’t know if he was going to get him or not. Unbelievable effort, though.”

Feeney, however, left the game on that series with what appeared to be a shoulder injury. He didn’t return, and wore a stocking cap and a pullover on the sideline in the second half.

Asked about Feeney’s status, Petersen said: “We’ll see. A lot of guys are banged up at this time. I think guys have got to be really, really banged up to not play in this next one (Friday’s Apple Cup against Washington State). So we’ll see.”

Record Watch

Washington’s 28-point first half and 45-point second half tied school records, and quarterback Jake Browning’s 90 percent completion rate — he was 18-for-20 — ranks second in single-game history at UW.

Browning also had a higher single-game completion percentage than any UW quarterback who had at least 20 attempts.

Senior tight end Joshua Perkins moved into a tie for fourth place in school history for touchdown receptions by a tight end. He caught his ninth against Oregon State, and is now tied with Jerramy Stevens.

Freshman tailback Myles Gaskin, who rushed for 127 yards on 23 carries, is just 17 yards shy of 1,000 yards rushing for the season. He already holds the UW true freshman rushing record.

Extra points

Neither defensive tackle Elijah Qualls (ankle) or tailback Dwayne Washington (leg) made the trip. … Linebacker Azeem Victor played but did not start, because of what defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski said was a failure to “take care of business.” … The Huskies have outscored Oregon State 121-34 in their last two games at Reser Stadium. They won 69-27 in 2013.
