The Washington-Gonzaga rivalry will be renewed a year early.
The Huskies and Bulldogs have already agreed to renew their annual series beginning in 2016-17, but the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament announced its bracket this morning, and guess which teams are playing each other in the first game on Wednesday, Nov. 25 in the Bahamas?
Yep. Washington and Gonzaga.
The Huskies will then face either Texas or Texas A&M in the second round. Michigan, Connecticut, Syracuse and Charlotte occupy the lower half of the bracket. Each team is guaranteed to play three games.
UW and Gonzaga haven’t played each other since December 2006. Gonzaga has won eight of the last nine meetings, and the Huskies lead the all-time series 29-14. UW’s most recent victory over Gonzaga came on Dec. 4, 2005 at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
And if you’re wondering — no, Nigel Williams-Goss will not be available to play against his former team. The ex-UW point guard, who transferred to Gonzaga after the end of last season, must sit out the upcoming season per NCAA transfer rules.
It’s worth noting, too, that the Huskies open the season Nov. 13 with a game against Texas in Shanghai, China, so it’s possible they could play the Longhorns twice in two weeks.
