Huskies notes: Wide receiver, tight end enter transfer portal
Two more Washington Huskies have entered the transfer portal.
Both wide receiver Sawyer Racanelli and tight end Mark Redman announced on social media this week they will look to continue their college football careers elsewhere.
That makes three Huskies who have entered the transfer portal in the past week, following the farewell outside linebacker Cooper McDonald posted last Wednesday. All three players are second-year freshmen.
Racanelli announced his departure Monday after playing in 13 games for the Huskies the past two seasons.
He debuted last fall as a true freshman, appearing in two games, before playing in 11 of 12 games this season, primarily as a regular on special teams.
Racanelli played 164 snaps for the Huskies this fall, per Pro Football Focus. That included 119 on special teams across his 11 games played, during which he tallied five tackles. He played 41 snaps at receiver, appearing on offense against Montana and Arkansas State, but did not record a catch in his career at UW.
Prior to his arrival in Seattle, Racanelli was considered a three-star recruit in the 2020 class, and finished his impressive three-year career at Hockinson High School as one of the top receivers in state history.
He finished his career with 247 catches for 4,518 yards and 63 receiving touchdowns across 38 games. His career receptions and receiving touchdowns each rank third in state history, while his receiving yards fourth.
He was on pace to contend for multiple state records before missing his senior season with a knee injury.
Racanelli also ranks in the top five in receptions in a season (fifth, 100 in 2018), receiving yards in a season (third, 1,801 in 2017) and receiving touchdowns in a season (fourth, 28 in 2017).
He was a key contributor in Hockinson’s back-to-back Class 2A state championship wins in 2017 and 2018 — including delivering a record-breaking performance in the win over Lynden his junior season.
Racanelli was also named the 2A state player of the year by the Associated Press that season.
Redman announced Tuesday he would also be leaving UW’s program.
He appeared in each of the Huskies’ 16 games the past two seasons, including playing 78 snaps between offense and special teams last fall and 182 this season, per PFF.
More than half of the snaps he played were on offense, and he consistently lined up at tight end, appearing there in 11 games this season. He caught one pass during his two seasons.
He was considered a four-star recruit from Corona Del Mar (Newport Beach, Calif.) in the 2020 class.
Racanelli and Redman were also both named to The News Tribune’s 2020 Western 100.
McDonald appeared in each of the Huskies’ 16 games during his two seasons, and started 10 games this fall, compiling 26 total tackles, including 5 1/2 for losses and 1 1/2 sacks.
McDonald was considered a three-star recruit out of Northwest (Justin, Texas) in the 2020 class.
He has since committed to San Diego State, where his older brother, Caden, is a standout linebacker.
RECRUITING UPDATES
Three recruits in the 2022 class have decommitted from UW in the past week.
Three-star La Jolla (La Jolla, Calif.) quarterback Jackson Stratton announced last Tuesday on social media he was reopening his recruitment.
Two South Sound products followed later in the week.
Three-star Lincoln tight end Chance Bogan announced Thursday he would reopen his recruitment.
And three-star offensive lineman Vega Ioane, who won a 4A state championship with Graham-Kapowsin earlier this month, announced his decommitment Sunday.
The Huskies have had eight decommits in this class since February.
With early signing day quickly approaching, the Huskies’ 2022 class has six remaining commits, including four-star recruits in Liberty (Henderson, Nev.) wide receiver Germie Bernard, Tumwater tight end Ryan Otton and Timber Creek (Keller, Texas) running back Emega Megwa — who enrolled early this fall — and three-star recruits in Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) offensive lineman Parker Brailsford, Desert Ridge (Mesa, Ariz.) outside linebacker Lance Holtzclaw and Emerald Ridge wide receiver Denzel Boston.
