WWU women lose at Classic
Senior center Kayla Bernsen recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, but the Western Washington Women’s Basketball team dropped a 79-56 contest to UC San Diego Saturday, Nov. 21, at the West Region Crossover Classic in Azusa, Calif.
The Vikings fall to 1-3 in the young season with their third consecutive loss. UC San Diego improves to 3-1 after posting tournament wins vs. WWU and Seattle Pacific.
Bernsen posted her second double-double of the season, recording game highs in points (22) and rebounds (12), while adding two blocked shots. Junior point guard Taylor Peacocke reached double-digits in scoring for the fourth consecutive game with 10 points.
The Vikings narrowly trailed 36-33 at halftime after going on a 9-4 run to close out the first half. A couple of early second-half baskets pulled the Vikings to within one at 36-35 and 38-37, but UCSD used a 9-0 run to pull ahead and built a 59-42 lead after three quarters. The Tritons out-scored the Vikings 43-23 in the second half en route to the 23-point victory.
UCSD was led by a double-double by Farrah Shokoor (18 points, 12 rebounds) and 15 points by Jamie Katuna.
