WWU women’s basketball signs Mark Morris player

Ashley Coons, a senior at Mark Morris High School in Longview, has signed a national letter of intent to play women’s basketball beginning this fall at Western Washington University.

A 5-foot-10 guard, Coons received Associated Press Class 2A all-state honorable mention last season, playing on a 25-2 Monarch team that won league, district and state titles. She averaged 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 steals, shooting 49.1 percent (163 of 332) from the field and 80.2 percent (93 of 116) at the free throw line.

Coons received first-team Longview Daily News All-Area and Greater St. Helens League all-star recognition and played in the all-state game, scoring a team-leading 19 points in helping the Class 2A squad to victory.
