After finishing sixth in the district tournament last week, Lynden Christian’s Erik Vander Velden didn’t have the result he wanted in the Class 1A State Championships on Wednesday, May 25, at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane.
“I just had a lot of mistakes here and there,” Vander Velden said. “I think I’m capable of playing better.”
Vander Velden finished with a score of 176 for the tournament which placed him in a tie for 39th. 41 golfers advanced to day two of the tournament.
“He didn’t have his best today,” coach Dana Hagen said. “He couldn’t get the speed of the greens down at first.”
Vander Velden said he plans on working out this summer so that he can hit the ball farther and compete against some of the better players.
Also tied for 39th was Mason Bass (88) of Mount Baker who repeated his score from the first day.
Bergman finishes in top 10
Mount Baker’s Clara Bergman (89) finished ninth among girls’ golfers with a score of 178.
Her teammate, Gemma Wilson (97), finished in a tie for 13th with a 188. She shot a 91 on the first day.
The Mountaineers girls’ golf team finished fifth in team scoring with a 19.5.
