Suni Lee's next act: A documentary and a comeback

MINNEAPOLIS - Olympics superstar Suni Lee announced Tuesday that she's making a comeback, one that will be captured by cameras.

"I know what I'm capable of," the St. Paul native said in an Instagram video that teased her attempt to compete in the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. "I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get there."

The not-so-surprise announcement coincided with news of a film that will record her preparations as well as look back at her life.

The untitled documentary is being produced by Fanatics Studios, a newly launched sports-entertainment company that also is working on a project about Tom Brady and will co-produce "The 2026 ESPYs."

Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios, which is run by Dick's Sporting Goods, is also involved. No release date or streaming service for the film has been announced.

"From our first conversations with Suni, it was immediately clear that there is an amazing story to tell that goes deeper than what fans see in competition," Michael D. Ratner, CEO of Fanatics Studios said in a press release. "This documentary gives audiences unprecedented access to one of the most accomplished athletes of her generation as she navigates extraordinary personal and professional challenges."

Anna Chai is set to direct. She previously worked on Anthony Bourdain's TV shows and co-directed the docu-series, "Gutsy," featuring Hillary and Chelsea Clinton.

Lee, 23, became one of Minnesota's most celebrated athletes of the past decade after becoming the all-around gold medalist at the 2020 Olympics. She was part of the USA team's gold-winning team effort in 2024.

"I know there's more in me, and this is my chance to challenge myself, test my limits, and see what I'm truly capable of," said Lee, who is an executive producer on the documentary. "This isn't about proving anyone wrong. It's about showing up for myself and discovering what's possible. Through the setbacks and the victories, I'm giving myself one more chance to find out what happens when I keep going."
