Commanders' Brutal Early Schedule Could Define Dan Quinn's Hot Seat Status
The fate of the 2026 Washington Commanders will likely be decided before their Week 7 bye. The stretch includes three divisional opponents, the reigning Super Bowl champion, a trip to London and a visit to the West Coast, all before the break.
In the first two weeks, they'll travel to divisional rivals Philadelphia and Dallas. The reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will visit Northwest Stadium for the Commanders' first home game, before Washington heads across the Atlantic Ocean for a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Upon returning home, they'll wrap up their first round of divisional games by hosting the New York Giants. Closing out this gauntlet in Week 6, they'll travel to face another former playoff team, the San Francisco 49ers.
Currently sitting at +200 odds to earn a playoff berth, it's crucial that Washington enter its bye week with at least a 3-3 record to avoid falling behind. "The Commanders play five of their first eight games against teams that made the postseason in 2025. For a team coming off a 5-12 year, and with a coaching staff that could be on the hot seat, a good start is imperative," John Keim wrote.
With the first half of their schedule front-loaded with divisional and in-conference matchups, securing early wins to help with various tiebreaker scenarios will make all the difference come November and December.

Following their bye week, the Commanders face another tall task: playing the Eagles and Giants for the second time and hosting the Los Angeles Rams. If Washington can come out of this stretch with its record at or within one game of .500, it will be rewarded with a stretch of three games against teams that did not make the playoffs, the Cincinnati Bengals, Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans.
"The Cardinals aren't seen as a threat to anyone. They are rebuilding, again, and despite improvements on the roster, it's hard to imagine them competing with the Commanders," wrote Caleb Skinner. "Washington's pass rush should dominate this game as they get after Jacoby Brissett or whoever is behind center. It should be a dominant victory for the Commanders."
Until training camp and the preseason start, every game on the schedule looks like a "must-win" scenario so Washington doesn't fall far behind in the standings. The team's success will boil down to how Jayden Daniels overcomes adversity and whether Dan Quinn can right the wrongs he faced in last year's abysmal campaign.
