William Saliba Subbed Off Against Spain in World Cup Semifinal: Here's Why

William Saliba had been one of the standout defenders at the 2026 World Cup, holding France's backline together with the kind of composure that makes him one of the best center-backs in the game right now.

He started every match except the group stage clash against Norway, where he was rested to manage a back problem. Even then, he played through the discomfort and never looked like a liability.

That back issue caught up with him at the worst possible time.

Saliba was forced off early in the second half of France's semifinal against Spain, and the timing couldn't have been worse. Reporter Julien Laurens captured the moment, sharing what Saliba was saying as he came off the pitch.

"You could just read on William Saliba's lips: 'My back is gone, my back is gone,' as he stopped playing."

Saliba's Exit Forces France to Reshuffle Defense Against Spain

Didier Deschamps turned to Maxence Lacroix to fill the gap, but it wasn't an even swap. Lacroix hadn't seen this level of big-game pressure and France's defensive shape took a hit because of it.

Saliba had been partnering Dayot Upamecano through most of the tournament and that combination gave France real stability at the back. His World Cup run underlined everything people already believed about him.

Physically dominant, calm under pressure and almost always the most assured player on the pitch when things got tight.

France still has the squad depth to push for the final without him. But replacing what Saliba brings isn't something you just figure out overnight.
